ICON•S Live Event - Professor Joseph H.H. Weiler's Workshop on Conferences Aimed at Publishing an Edited Book
Most edited books are at best uneven in quality and at worst (frequently) of poor quality and remain unread. Most of these books started their life in "research project" for which, often times, external funding was received and hence a 'deliverable' was expected. The end result is a line in the list of publications of the Editors and a line in the list of publications of the contributors. It might have involved a nice trip somewhere and some nice social gathering but that is frequently the best thing about the whole affair. The publishers are aware of this but mostly don't care. They are experienced in predicting the sales, have captive markets for different types of books and price them accordingly -- typically very high and beyond individual buying potential. The book finishes collecting dust in university libraries (or even online listing as 1,564,000 in the Amazon list) and one is lucky if it garners even one book review. There is a vicious spill over effect since given this dismal reality Book Review Editors of journals are reluctant to send such out to review. Sound familiar?

A big chunk of responsibility for this unsatisfactory state of affairs is bad planning and design of the project and poor execution of Workshop/Colloquium/Mini-Conference and its aftermath.

In this workshop I plan to proceed step by step through the entire process and suggest what I consider "best practice' which would increase the likelihood of a quality edited book and subsequent visibility. I shall also discuss the pros and cons regarding an in-person workshop v an online workshop. We plan to enable questions and shared experiences.
